MY SUMMER VACATION by Cindi Loftus
(sound like 6th grade? Leave it to Beaver? It's supposed to. This section is rated PG-13. My relatives are safe to read this and look at the pictures. I will tell you when you need to stop so you don't accidently see any boobies, lol)

I went to the Florida Keys with my Husband and my dog for four days. We stopped to see all the important land marks....

We stayed in a beautiful little rural cottage on a private beach in Boca Chica Key. There were kayaks to paddle, ocean to fish and swim in, and a jacuzzi to get romantic in.
We did none of the above! I tried the kayak thing except the it was low tide and i ended up pushing the kayak out to the sand bar and back because the water wasn't deep enough to get it off the muck on the bottom.
It was quite funny for any one watching me crawl in the sandy mush and drag a kayak. I had to crawl to distribute my body weight. If I tried to stand up and walk I sunk down about a foot and a half and would fall over. It was like quick sand. I did get a sun burn though, so that's a good? thing. And I certainly got my exersize that day.
We did sit out on the little veranda and read and breath in the beautiful ocean breezes on our first night there. My husband played his guitar. It was very peaceful and quiet. (except for the occasional jet fighter plane that broke the sound barrier, lol, we were near a Navy base.)
I saw a shark cruise by in about 2 feet of water. The not dangerous kind I was told, lol. Sorry I'll brave the alligators to go kayaking by my house, but sharks are a bit over my bravery level. I guess I watched Jaws when I was way too young, it caused PTSS (Post Traumatic Shark Syndrome).
There was no breeze the rest of the time we were there. It was replaced by swarms of insects called no-see-ums. I would rename them yes-bite-ems.
To walk ten feet from the cottage to the car and back would mean ten bites, no matter what posionous chemicals I had coated myself with. Yes about one bite per foot was the average. So we didn't spend much more then a minute or so outside of the cottage after that.
We did drive down to Key West for a tour of the cool archetechture and bars. The houses are reminiscent of a milder version of New Orleans.
Sloppy Joe's Bar is famous for being Ernest Hemingway's hangout.
Jimmy Buffet is the home town hero, with pictures and signs about him all over the place. He also still has a home there, but where it is exactly is kept quiet.
My husband went back down to Key West at night to listen to the guitar players at various bars, while me and Lexi decided to spend a little time, uhm, relaxing..
Down at the end of the dirt road from our cottage was some natural artwork created by Raphael. He spent hours and days in the hot sun creating a labyrinth of rooms and tunnels out of rocks, coral and drift wood that had piled up after the hurricanes a few years ago. ..
He still managed to work there every day and we were lucky enough to catch him and take his picture. Everything is built by hand and on public (U.S. NAVY) land.
He knows that it could be torn down at any moment but considers it as a sand castle.
A beautiful work for as long as it lasts.

There are some very interesting people who live in the keys.

The cottage we stayed at was owned by a very sweet and friendly couple who had been there for over thirty years. They lived off the land as much as possible, fishing and lobster trapping. I asked if they didn't get hurt by handling the lobsters and was told that the Florida lobsters didn't have big pinching claws to hurt you but they were horny. Me, being me, replied, what? They get horny and hump your hand? No I was told. Horny as their shell is covered with sharp bumps, or horns. Ugh, sometimes I gotta remember I am in the civilian world, ya know? It was funny though. To me anyway. I don't know what my "new friends" thought of it.
The last night of our stay, something unique and frightening happened; a first, and I hope a last for me. Earlier that day Lexi was going crazy in the kitchen but we couldn't figure out why and thought she must of chased a lizard under the stove. I found out later, it wasn't a lizard. It was 3 am, as I sat writing in my notebook (yes the paper kind without the plug) drinking my Captain Morgan and diet orange soda, when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, first thought is always a damn lizard. Turned my head to find, scurrying across the floor a SEVEN INCH LONG< FAT AS A DIME< S C OR P I O N ! As it ran under the throw rug I ran in and woke up my husband and said "Sorry to wake you Honey, but there is a scorpion in the living room." Groggily he looked at me like I was nuts and said, "Are you sure you aren't drunk, or were dreaming, or just saw a lizard?" I know he didn't believe me until he saw it for him self. Now usually I would capture an animal alive and let it go outside, but in this case It was just to dangerous to get close enough to catch it or to take the chance of it running under something else in the house. ( I am deathly ( yea, in the literal sense) allergic to venomous bites (bees, wasps, red ants, snakes etc...). So I'm sorry Mr Scorpion, may you rest it peace, or as it happened pieces.
Over all we had a great time, got caught up on our sleep and came back feeling refreshed and renewed. everyone really does need a break from the routine once in a while, even for a long weekend. Don't wait six years for a vacation like I did! Even Lexi had a good time doing what she always does, lol
