I first noticed Kimberly Kane when she appeared in Wicked’s 2006 sci-fi release, The Visitors. She was being probed by an alien creature’s tentacles at the time. I loved the movie and was impressed with her acting skills. She had the amazing ability to pull off a sex scene with a fake space monster and make it stroke-able. Since then Kimberly has continued to rise up through the ranks to her current role as an actress & director for Vivid-Alt. Her multi-award nominated movie, Morphine, pushes boundaries. Prostitution, drugs, gun-play, and rough sex combine in a dark story-line with artsy, yet still sizzling sex scenes. Her newest film, Live in my Secrets, is another dark drama which breaks subjects previously taboo in porn films, bloody sex being just one of them. Kimberly is quirky, quick witted, and cupie doll cute. Read on for my conversation with the King of the Kane Army, Kimberly Kane.

Xcitement: So what are you doing right now?
Kimberly: Sitting on the couch, watching Curb your Enthusiasm.
X: That sounds kind of mellow for your world.
K: My world? You have no idea how mellow my world is. It is all about sitting on the couch and watching Curb and twittering.
X: I’m a couch person myself. I prefer laying down with my husband and my dog and watching a movie.
K: We are very similar then.
X: Well except I don’t tie people up and pour blood on them and have sex for my day job. So you have a good balance.
K: Yin/Yang.
X: So true. I loved Morphine by the way. You are up for a lot of awards for it. The movie was really impressive. You have got to be an anal retentive perfectionist, because every detail was well thought out.
K: Yeah, obsessively.
X: I think they should add an award for best Alt Movie to the categories.
K: Oh yeah. Wouldn’t that be interesting.
X: Well enough of my opinion. How did you come up with the Morphine movie and decide the name?
K: Did you see the extras on Morphine where I talk about when I worked at the Sugar Shack?
X: Yes I did, that was so interesting. (Kimberly had a “confessional” where she told about her experiences working at a men’s club called Sugar Shack. One of the best extras I have ever seen.)
K: Well that’s where the idea first came from was that shitty jack shack that I worked in, in Portland. Oregon. So I imagined this dark world that this girl is in and she strives for other things but in the meantime she is living this really sketchy life with these dark rooms and dark people and bad things happening. That was the original idea, than I threw in some country rock and roll kind of feeling. I went to Nashville for a week and got drunk and got high and took photos and brought that into the movie. I wanted to bring in a legitimate feeling. And then Audrey (Hollander) is a total Southern Rock crazy chick, so she was ideal for the role.
X: She was perfect, and the cinematography in the movie is so beautiful.
K: Well that’s Scarlet Von Cutter there, my partner in crime, camera woman and editor. She shot Morphine and Live in my Secrets. I shoot second camera, but they don’t use my shots very often. I just feel like I am actually doing something other then pointing my finger. Scarlet is the wind beneath my wings. She’s sitting right here, so I am just embarrassing her.
X: Well she did an excellent job. I even loved the music that was in the movie, especially the song that the movie starts with.
K: That’s Zach and his Unhappy Guitar. He is in a few really popular Rock-abily bands up in Canada. He did all that really cool bluesy stuff. You can find him on myspace.
X: You did a lot of controversial things in Morphine, but the one that most stands out in my mine is when you brought out the gun.
K: The one in the vagina?
X: Yeah.
K: I get a way with a lot of shit.
X: How do you get away with that?
K: It’s tricky. You can’t be forcing someone into having sex with a gun. It has to be two people that want it, so she kind like asks for it. I got away with it.
X: Maybe because you are a female director you get away with a little bit more?
K: Probably, yeah.
X: You definitely do push limits. I also noticed something else really cool about being a Vivid Alt director; every time you finish a movie you get a party. So how was your Morphine party?
K: It was the first themed Vivid Alt party. So I came up with the black-eyed beauty pageant. Morphine is white trash, so I wanted to have a white trash kind of contest. So all the girls at the party, including my sister, got black eyes painted on them by a makeup artist and they all competed in a beauty pageant.
X: You come up with some crazy creative shit. So let’s talk about Live in my Secrets. Are these your real fantasies?
K: Yeah. They all come from dreams or something I see that inspires me. I wanted to do a fetish themed movie because fetish is close to my heart.
X: So tell me about the scene with Tyler and a horse.
K: Tyler Knight plays our stable boy and he gets strung up in a barn in this crazy psycho contraption and has sex with Aiden Starr with all these horse around them, that are covered with flies, which was so awesome.
X: That is so kinky. Another little edgy thing you did, sex and animals in the same scene.
K: I think I have had a horse in all my movies. In Triple Ecstasy I had a picture, done by a very famous artist, of a princess masturbating a horse in the background. In Naked and Famous (for Pulse), I had Dana Vespoli doing a DP in a horse arena, and the horse was literally standing over them, like he was waiting for his turn. No one ever touched the horse so I got away with that too.
X: You go pretty close.
K: I go really close. (Laughs)
X: So what is the meaning of the horse? You must really love horses or think they are sexual…
K: I grew up riding horses. They have always been really cool to me. Horses are very powerful. Horses have big cocks. Horses are strong. Horses are sexual.
X: Being on top of a horse riding him while he is galloping is pretty sexual.
K: Absolutely. I guess that is what it is. Horses are really cool, and strong and sexy. And it freaks people out so it’s funny.
X: You also have bondage and domination in this movie.
K: There is a scene with Bobby Starr and Claire Adams. Claire Adams is the best dominatrix out there right now and Bobby Starr is the best submissive. They had never had sex before, so I wanted to put them together in a sex scene and it was pretty hardcore.
X: What was the main THRUST of the sex scene? (Laughs)
K: Bobby is wrapped in rope and Claire is super quiet, and than verbal under her breath and delivers intense blows and Bobby can take anything you do to her. So it is a really special domination scene between these two. There is really great anal strap on too.
X: When you are directing something like that how do you keep directing? How do you not get wrapped up in what they are doing and just sit there with your mouth open?
K: I do. We will be shooting and I’ll just say out loud, that is really hot, and I need to shut my mouth and not be saying things during the sex scenes, but sometimes I just can’t help it. I’ll get blown away sometimes. There are scenes that I am involved in where two people will be doing something that blows my mind and I stop and I watch and I have to snap back into whatever I am doing. It’s a good gig.
X: I have to talk about you and Sasha doing this sex in blood thing. And I think it’s really cool with the pan over to the strawberry syrup so everybody gets it in the end.
K: Yeah, I didn’t want the strawberry syrup shot in there, but I had too.
X: I guess you had to do it, so that it was pointed out that it wasn’t real. It was just fantasy.
K: It wasn’t real blood. It was studio blood. But they wanted me to put the syrup in so no one could say it was a brutal blood scene.
X: I was okay with the syrup I thought it was kind of cool, like you put one over on everyone, and it was kind of an ironic shot. But it probably bothered you because your artistic vision was not to have strawberry syrup in the scene.
K: No, but we had to shoot something like that to stay out of trouble.
X: I heard that you pretty much offended everyone in production at Vivid so…
K: Yeah. But in the end Steven Hirsch says yah or nay and he’s into my stuff so, everyone else can shut up. (Laughs)
X: So you are just lucky that the boss is a sick perv like you are.
K: Yeah. Excellent.
X: So you have a dark, sick, artistic, beautiful mind.
K: Well thank you very much.
X: And those words don’t often go together. But they just seem to for you. I can t imagine what is going to show up in your next movie. I am scared!
K: I wonder… Do you want to know what I am working on next?
X: Yeah!
K: I am going to put out a super 8 movie release. I did some super 8 in Live in my Secrets and I fell in love with super 8 so I’m going to do an all film release, like 45 minutes to an hour long.
X: What is it going to be about? Tell me the sickest thing, or the coolest thing that is going to be in the movie.
K: The thing about super 8 is the film is three minutes long before you have to change it out. So the girl is going to have three to six minutes to make a vignette. I’ve shot about 40% of it so far. I want to shoot a scene where a girl is choking herself with a belt and masturbating to her reflection and pissing on a mirror. Just stuff that is visually heavy. I shot a scene already where I am fucking myself with a bouquet of roses.
X: How do you do that?
K: Very carefully. (Both laugh)
X: Did you take the thorns off ahead of time?
K: Yeah.
X: That’s why I like your stuff, it is full of symbolism and metaphors. You can watch it twenty times and still see new things and view them in a different way. Your stuff could have college papers written about it. Oh and you are doing choking, another edgy thing you are going to have to get away with.
K: Yeah. (Laughs) I guess it is a matter of taste, right?
X: You definitely push buttons. I would think there are people who love your movies and people who hate your movies and think you go too far.
K: Yeah, but the people that think I go too far, really don’t speak up as much as the people who like it.
X: Truthfully, people that think you go too far probably watch your movies and jerk off to them too.
K: Yeah. (Laughs) Hopefully.
X: You like to be tied up it seems.
K: Yeah. It’s cool I like it. I like being blindfolded too.
X: Do you like the other end of it? The tying and blindfolding of another?
K: Yes.
X: Which do you like better?
K: I think it’s always easier to dominate someone else. But to be the submi ssive you have to be in the mind state. Sometimes I can’t be a submissive because I’m not in the space. But when you are in the space it’s better to be submissive I think.
X: It’s odd that people that are control freaks are also good submissives.
K: Every good dominant began as a submissive or they wouldn’t know how it feels.
X: Maybe I need some training.
K: Maybe you should get some training.
X: Truthfully, I am into it, but I think I would rather watch two other people do it, then do either role myself. So I don’t know if that means I am a chicken shit, or just lazy.
K: Naw, you are a voyeur, that’s a whole nother thing.
X: What do you think about when you masturbate?
K: All different kinds of scenarios.
X: After you film a scene, do you go home and think about it?
K: Naw, not unless it was bad or I bombed or something, then I come home and think about how crappy of a performer I am. I just think about really weird shit. I am really into transsexuals right now. I always like gangbang scenarios. That usually works.
X: Are you in the center of the gangbang?
K: Yep. (Laughs)
X: You remind me of one of my favorite directors from the old days.
K: Who?
X: Thomas Zupko.
K: He’s great!
X: Have you seen a lot of his movies?
K: I’ve been on his sets before. And I’ve seen his movies and I’ve heard stories. He was one of the real creative minds in the business.
X: He is probably my favorite director of all time so far, as far as someone’s body of work. Because everything he did was layered and has different meanings. He also put a lot of comedy and literary references into his work. His stuff was also sick as hell.
He pushed limits too. You stuff is more artsy, but your movies remind me of his in a take no prisoners way, hold nothing back way. I think that’s a huge compliment but…
K: I think so too.
X: One more thing, I just saw the pictures you sent to go with this interview, and they are gorgeous. Excellent ph otography. There is an artist that paints pictures of girls with big soulful eyes, and your pictures look like her paintings. Her name is SAS.
K: Oh cool.
X: Do you have a message for your fans?
K: Thanks. Keep watching.
