Kids’ Top 10 Web searches? Sex and Porn of course!

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

he good folks at Symantec’s OnlineFamily.Norton, a web-monitoring service for parents, scanned 3.5 million searches between February 2008 and July 2009 to determine the top searches made by kids and guess what?

Sex and Porn made the TOP 10!

Here is the complete TOP 10:

1. YouTube

2. Google

3. Facebook

4. Sex

5. MySpace

6. Porn

7. Yahoo

8. Michael Jackson

9. Fred (YouTube star Fred Figglehorn)

10. eBay

Here’s a link to the entire TOP 100 searches by kids. (I love that Norton has identifiers next to names on the list so parents know who in the heck they are. But really, do we not know who Miley Cyrus is? True though, I had no idea who the Fred guy was!)

From the BBC’s web site:

“Symantec’s internet safety advocate, Marian Merritt, said that with the service, ‘parents can stay in the loop on what their kids are doing online.’ ‘It also helps identify ‘teachable moments’ when parents should be talking with their kids about appropriate online behaviour and other issues in their kids’ online lives.’ “

Even my 6-year-old is searching online for You Tube. Walsh likes to watch videos that kids make with Lego’s re-enacting scenes from “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones.”  Our computer is in a common room and I walk in and out on him checking what he’s looking at, but I honestly don’t know how he navigates to You Tube — if Michael has it bookmarked or he knows to type it into Google. I do worry when he’s in You Tube that he’ll be searching for something innocent and someone will have slipped something bad into the group of “Indiana Jones” videos.

Google.cn Losing Search Market Share After Online Adult Crackdown

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Google’s search market share in China appears to be on the downswing after the government created limits on porn queries.
Baidu now has overtaken Google as the No. 1 search engine, according to NetApplications, which shows Baidu began gaining search market share late last year and that Google.cn started slipping in March.
Chinese authorities earlier this year criticized Google, Baidu and other Chinese Internet services for directing surfers to content considered illegal.
And just last month, China temporarily blocked Google access. Google.cn has restored its search functions, but search services for foreign sites are still unavailable.
Last week, China’s Ministry of Public Security told the country’s official news agency Xinhua that it not only will continue restrictions against online adult content, but it will beef up enforcement with the help of nine different government and Communist Party departments.

Kissing leads to sex before marriage, warns former prostitute-turned-preacher!

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

A former prostitute-turned-preacher has warned young Christians against kissing or cuddling before marriage, saying that it may lead to premarital sex.

Evangelist Sy Rogers, who confessed being a transsexual and gay before, says that “kisses and cuddles” and the “good old pash” are foreplay people should abstain from if they are not married.

According to The Adelaide Advertiser, Rogers, who believes homosexuality can be “cured” with prayer, is due to give a talk at a conference at Enfield Baptist Church in Adelaide next month, reports the Herald Sun.

In a preview released recently, he asked: “So when is it time to stir up sexual desire? When you can afford to: in marriage. Control sexual desire; don’t let it control you.”

However, sexual health experts warned against such extreme form of chastity, saying that it may leave young people “more vulnerable to sexual exploitation.”

SHine SA (Sexual Health information networking & education) teacher education co-ordinator Jane Flentje said: “(Abstinence) may mean kids delay having sex a bit longer, but on the whole they don’t wait until they’re married,” she said. “When they do start having sex they’re not using contraceptives and condoms as often, and they’re not as comfortable talking to people about it.

“If kids don’t get any opportunity to learn about this stuff and explore relationships, they’re much more vulnerable to sexual exploitation.”

Calif. porn dealers face federal sentencing in Pa.

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

A husband and wife who owned a California company that distributed videos depicting deviant sexual conduct, including simulated rape and murder, are scheduled for sentencing before a federal judge in Pittsburgh.

Robert Zicari and Janet Romano pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to distribute DVDs purchased by an undercover U.S. postal inspector in Pittsburgh and face sentencing Wednesday along with their company, Extreme Associates Inc. of Northridge, Calif.

The couple contests the government’s claim that the material is “sadistic or masochistic” for sentencing purposes, and their attorneys are expected to argue for probation.

U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan says any jury in the country would have found the DVDs “obscene” under federal law.

Health Officials Backtrack on Number of HIV Cases in Porn Industry

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

County public health officials backtracked on the number of previously unpublicized HIV cases in adult film performers Tuesday, saying they don’t know if those who tested positive were actively working in the industry at the time.

Last week county officials told The Los Angeles Times that there were at least 16 cases of HIV in adult film performers reported to them since 2004. The disclosure came after news that a female porn performer recently tested HIV positive.

On Tuesday, the department told the Times it does not know if any of the people who tested positive were actively performing in the adult film industry.

Officials also corrected the number of new cases adjusting the figure upward from 16 to 18.

The Adult Industry Medical Foundation, the San Fernando Valley clinic that serves the porn industry, said none of the people were actively performing when they were tested.

Clinic co-founder Sharon Mitchell said each case involved either a non-performer or an aspiring actor or actress who tested positive, then dropped out of the business.

County public health officials said they mislabeled all reports from the clinic as adult performers, when they had no information about their occupations. The clinic was created primarily to serve the porn industry, but also serves other clients.

“Here’s the bottom line: we’re an HIV testing center,” Mitchell, said. “We don’t just test the adult entertainment industry. We have a lot of people who come who want testing from the general public.”

The female actress who tested positive for HIV at their clinic earlier this month remains the only case detected in a working performer since 2004, Mitchell said.

In 2004, panic spread through the industry and briefly shut down production at several studios, after a male porn star and three actresses he worked with tested positive.

Public Health Director Dr. Jonathan Fielding said the county does not have enough information to explore these cases further.

“The system we have and the laws we have do not facilitate the kind of contact tracing and verification that we’d like to see. AIDS has been treated separately from other STDs,” Fielding said.

In HIV cases, the medical clinic or doctor who conducts the test is responsible for notifying partners, Fielding said. For other sexually transmitted diseases, state laws allow the county to make partner notification.

“I’m sure that AIM provides a useful service to the degree that they prevent performers from performing when they have sexually transmitted diseases or HIV,” Fielding said.

He said AIM’s efforts are “better than nothing,” but not enough to prevent a life-threatening occupational hazard.

Canton Inn does away with strippers, will become restaurant and bar

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

For the first time, social vice activity at a Delaware property has ceased through the Delaware Department of Justice’s enforcement of Delaware’s Nuisance Abatement Act.  The Department announced today that, following a lengthy investigation, all activity resembling adult entertainment will cease at the Canton Inn and the property owner will take other measures to comply with the law.

“Today marks an important milestone in our enforcement of Delaware’s Nuisance Abatement Law,” said State Solicitor Lawrence Lewis.  “The Delaware Attorney General’s office is using this statute in new and innovative ways to combat social vice crime in our neighborhoods.  As a result, this property will no longer be a haven for illegal activity.”

The Department of Justice alleges that the Canton Inn, at 704 Norman Eskridge Highway in Seaford, has been the site of prostitution and lewd sexual conduct over a period of several years.  Following an investigation by the Delaware State Division of Professional Regulation and the Delaware State Police, the Department of Justice determined that the property presented an immediate threat to the public health, safety and welfare.  Rather than defend itself against the Department in court, the owner agreed to abate the nuisance voluntarily by ceasing all adult entertainment activity, making renovations to the building, and discontinuing advertising as a “gentlemen’s club”.  The establishment will now be promoted as a restaurant and bar.

“The residents of Seaford will benefit greatly from this agreement,” stated Representative Daniel B. Short, Seaford.  “This is exactly how the Nuisance Abatement statute should work and I commend the Attorney General’s Office for their efforts.”

In August, 2007 Attorney General Beau Biden launched a statewide effort to fight neighborhood crime in Delaware under the state’s Drug Nuisance and Social Vices Abatement Act.  Under the Nuisance Abatement Act, enforcement actions can take a variety of forms, including closure of a property.  In September, 2008 a property in Wilmington was the first to be ordered closed permanently under this Act by court order.

The Delaware Department of Justice identifies nuisance properties statewide through its own investigations and cooperation with state and local police agencies, local authorities, civic associations, and residents.  Since August, 2007, the Department has abated 74 nuisances, either by obtaining a court order or through securing the voluntary cooperation of the owner to clean up the illegal activity.
