Exotic Dancer’s Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo 2008
September 20th, 2008The official name is Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo but we all refer to it as “the Expo”. Xcitement has been there every year since it’s inception, so it’s a summer tradition to us. This year the Expo was subtitled “Year of the GM.” Exotic Dancer saluted the general managers who tend to all the details of keeping the clubs running day in and day out. More often than not what separates a highly popular, successful club from the ordinary is the general manager. This year one of our own won the inaugural award for the south east, but we get ahead of ourselves….
Opening day this year just happened to be the day Xcitement went to press, so I missed out. Workshops for General Managers were the menu of the day. I heard it was a great welcome party at Rumjungle that night. Platypus from Tootsie’s had his camera, took lots of pics and he graciously gave Xcitement a disc with all his photos for us to use. That’s Ronnie Mund, Howard Stern’s limo driver stealing the spotlight. We’d see lots more of him at the Awards Show.
There was a choice of taking a late afternoon flight and arriving in Las Vegas Monday night or taking an early flight out in the morning. Two years ago I flew in on opening day and as fate had it, learned a lesson from the airlines. My 9:00am flight got delayed departing Fort Lauderdale due to a severe thunderstorm, we were three hours late in leaving, then missed a connection in Atlanta and by the time I arrived in Las Vegas, the trade show was winding up for the day. This year I took the 5:30am to make sure I would arrive on time. Continental hit me up for $25 for my box of Xcitement’s, now I here they’re even charging for the first piece of checked baggage. We always run into old friends and familiar faces, this year was no exception. Storm from Scarlet’s Cabaret was on the flight and we had breakfast together in Houston as we changed planes. It was a great day for flying and all flight and baggage arrived on time. The flight descended over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, a spectacular view.
The cab driver decided to take me on a joy ride instead of the direct route on Paradise and Tropical to get from the airport to Mandalay Bay. He took me all the way around, making a big “S” on the interstate and coming in from behind the hotel. When I started to bitch he turned the meter off, but he still was ripping me off. I phoned his cab number in to the taxi authorities as he dropped me off.
Mandalay Bay was highly efficient, a prompt freindly check in and they gave me a room at 10:30, hours before the official check in time. Already it was too late for the Legal Panel, one of the most important and also interest events of the Expo. I’m always fascinated by the first amendment lawyers retelling their battles with local and state governments. I unpacked and cleaned up as fast as possible, ate a quick lunch and headed down to the convention center to pick up my badges. There I met Rod Kimbrough from the Cheetah Palm Beach who had just received the Award for GM of the Year, South East region. Rod certainly is deserving, as anyone who has worked for or with him will tell you. He does have the distinction of being the only GM Cheetah Palm Beach ever had, you could say he built the club! The Trade Show was already open, Exotic Dancer had moved the hours up from last year so it caught me by surprise. It was a shock for people to see me without my camera. After making a walk around, and consuming a couple of energy drinks, I made the long long trek up to my room, got my camera and a bag full of Xcitements and returned to the convention floor.
The trade show combined the Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expo and Storerotica in one large exhibit hall. Last year they were split in two and everyone shunted back and forth between the two. The convenience of both in the same room was convenient to all. Of most interest to me is always the feature entertainers and I spent the majority of my time with Pure Talent, Continental Theatrical Agency, Lee Network and Gold Star Entertainment. Since due to the economy so few clubs are booking feature entertainers, we got to see many entertainers that we don’t get to see anymore and to meet some new ones that we hope to see in the future. I made the rounds, trying to look into every booth, but time was a premium and there were so many distractions. Before we knew it the lights were flashing and it was time to clear the conference halls.
Tuesday night there was a Leather and Lace Party at the Las Vegas Penthouse Club. I was sound asleep at the time the party began, waking up hours later. Remember I had been up since 3:30am Miami time to catch my flight. Wednesday morning I was still jet lagged. It was easy to get up but hard to stay up. And those king size beds at Mandalay Bay are just so comfortable. Breakfast at the Bayside Buffet at Mandalay Bay has to be one of the best breakfasts anywhere. You can feast enough to last almost last all through the day. If one is lucky enough to get a table in the room with all the open windows, the tropical landscaping is spectacular.
At 1:00 the trade show was open for a whole six hours which would seem like an amazing amount of time. But it isn’t. The thing is, after going to EXPO for so many years you get to know a lot of people and time just flies by. When you have two objectives, taking photographs and making new contacts, there’s no time to waste. Once again it was the good people at Deep Throat Energy Drink and Faded Energy that kept me going through the day. We got to visit with Red Light District and Anabolic, two of the leaders in adult videos, saw all the Badgirlz girz, the Rick’s Cabaret people and so many more. Rio Rivers informed me that Miss Nude World is on this year - we wish her the best!
Exotic Dancer revamped the awards show staging it at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The comedian got replaced by a rock’n'roll band, The Crashers, the premier La Vegas ’80s cover band. The awards were hosted by Jessie Jane, Ronnie the Limo Driver with emmcee MarkyMark. Ron Jeremy, Jim St. John (Pantera) and Justine Joli were among the many presenters. Here’s the list of all the awards, and in case you’re interested, yes, everyone partied way way into the night, but you already knew that, this is Las Vegas!
